1. Vocabulary: In Context

2. Vocabulary: Reference

Here in these Reference questions, you need to focus on a word generally a pronoun within a short passage of text. You need to choose the answer from the given four options that the word is referring to. For example, there might be a pronoun “it” “them” or “this” to replace a noun or a noun phrase. This evaluates your ability to follow an idea with the help of a short passage.

Tip: Look at the grammar of the word such as whether is it singular or plural. If it’s singular you should look for a single person or a concept, if it’s plural the original idea must also be plural. Check for the sentences around. The point to be remembered is that a single concept might be contained within a lengthy noun phrase

3. Factual Information

In this question type, you are asked to identify explicitly stated specific information in a short passage. This question type will not ask about general themes but instead about the facts contained in the passage. You have to select one option from the given possible answers.

Tip: Recognise keywords in the question to enable you to locate the correct part of the text to find the answer.

4. Detail - “Not”/”Except”

In this question type the word “except” or “not” is included in the stem. Your task is to select the option which is not mentioned in the text from the given 4 options.

Tip: While reading the answer options, which one do you not recall reading information on?

5. Author’s Meaning - Paraphrasing

If you come across this question type, you will see that an entire sentence is highlighted in the given short passage of the text. You must choose from the given 4 answer options,  the one which is closest in meaning to the highlighted sentence.

Tip: The wider the range of your vocabulary, the better you will be able to answer this question type.

6. Author’s Meaning - Function

In this kind of question, you are asked to identify the purpose of the author in including a detail, concept or argument in a text. You have to choose 1 option in front and he is given 4 options.

Tip: Try to eliminate options that you are sure are incorrect, then try to guess the correct answer from the remaining options.

7. Inference

“Inference” means a conclusion that is based on reasoning and evidence. This kind of question does not ask you to locate particular information, instead, you are asked to deduce what the writer is suggesting in a short passage of text. Inference questions will always have the verb “suggest”, “infer” or “imply” in the question stem. Identify the topic of the question from the options given.

Tip: Locate information in the passage based on that topic. Eliminate those options which you find are incorrect only select an answer if you find evidence.

8. Coherence

In this kind of question, you will be given a short text and one additional sentence. Within the text, there will be 4 possible insertion points for the given additional sentence. You must choose the place where it would fit best. This tests your ability to understand coherence and cohesion and also your skill to structure a paragraph.

Tip: Identify the most logical place for the sentence to fit in. Try to figure out if it is an example of a definition. Does it give the result of something that was mentioned earlier? Eliminate options that you know are incorrect, and then choose the most probable answer.

9. Main Idea (Prose summary)

For this question type, you will be shown a sentence summarising a reading passage. You will be given six answer options from which you need to choose three. The task is to identify which three options paraphrase key ideas in the given passage. This question tests your ability to identify similar ideas through knowledge of synonyms and paraphrases and to identify the main idea in a passage.

Tip: Read the initial sentences carefully as well as the answer options. Go through the given passage for similar ideas. Eliminate any answer options that are inaccurate or are minor details. And select the answer from the remaining option.

10. Table Completion

In this question type, you have to complete the blanks in the detailed summary of a reading passage. You will see an empty table with two or three-section headings. You must drag and drop appropriate options from the given answer choices into their relevant place in the given table.

Tip: Read the headings carefully. Scan in the given text for paraphrases or synonyms of each section heading. Reject the options which are not retable. Choose the correct answers based on the key points you find in the text. Remember the language used may not be the same but it may present the same meaning.

TOEFL Listening Syllabus

In listening, there will be two types of conversations that will be heard. One will be a short conversation and the other will be a long conversation. In short conversations after a short conversation, there will 1 question that will be a multiple-choice question having options to select from. While in a long conversation, there will be multiple questions to be answered. In listening there will be two sections, which are as follows-

The Listening Section of TOEFL evaluates the candidate’s ability to understand conversations and lectures in English. In this section of TOEFL, the candidates are required to listen to the recordings in which the speech sounds are natural and answer questions related to the same. Candidates can take notes during listening to the audio. There are two types of listening items in this section. They are lectures and conversations, both are based on campus language. After each lecture or conversation completes there will be a set of questions that you need to answer based on those recordings.

You will have 20 minutes to answer questions. It does not contain the time you listen to the recordings. The whole TOEFL Listening Section will take about 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

Components of the Listening Exam Syllabus

The TOEFL Listening section generally consists of  two components, they are:

·       Academic lectures

The academic lectures in the TOEFL iBT reflect a typical conversation that occurs in the classroom and is usually given by a professor. These conversations could be of different kinds.  Lectures may include monologues or any academic discussions involving one professor and multiple students.

It involves a broad range of subjects such as business, anthropology, botany, biology, psychology, archaeology, chemistry etc. Normally, the lecture continues for about 4-6 minutes and is followed by 6 questions. You cannot see the questions until the lecture finishes.

·       Academic Conversations

TOEFL listening conversations include the exchange of dialogues between two people. One person is always a student. Another person may be another student, a university administrator, a teaching assistant, a librarian etc. The conversations in the TOEFL iBT test cover conversations that take place in an administrative office or during a conversation about any service with the staff of the university.

The conversations generally encompass academic topics and information related to course requirements, registering for a class, housing payment, or requesting information at the library. You will be shown a picture that shows two people having a conversation in a particular environment. Normally, the conversation will be of 2-3 minutes and then you have to answer the asked questions. You will not be able to see questions until the conversation gets over.

TOEFL Listening Question Types

The types of questions asked in the Listening section of the TOEFL are:

§  Purpose questions

This kind of question asks you about the purpose of the conversation or lecture, not the content. These questions will generally begin with “Why”. For example “Why is the lecturer asking the student about …...?”  or “Why is the student talking about the topic…” etc. The answer to these questions may be indirectly given in the recording, or it may be directly stated by the speaker.

§  Specific Detail Questions

To answer these kinds of questions you will have to remember particular information. You will need to take notes while the audio is going on in order to answer the questions later. Although they look straightforward, these questions can occur at any difficulty level.

§  Function Questions

Function questions are like mini-purpose questions. This kind of question won't ask you what the word means, but it asks you why the speaker says what he says. Many times, the speaker uses idioms, and slang or says things that are not directly relevant to what the question asks. Your job is to find out what seems to be irrelevant information in that conversation.

§  Attitude Questions

The attitude question asks about the attitude and intention of the speaker when he or she talks about a specific topic in detail. To answer these, you will have to use implied information to decide what the speaker’s thoughts or feelings are at some point in the scene. The information you need may not be verbal but you will have to understand the tone of voice to answer these questions correctly.

§  Organization Questions

These kinds of questions ask you to understand how the information or details are organized in the conversation or in the lecture. It is one of the most difficult questions in the listening section you have to answer. In order to answer this question correctly, you need to understand the arrangement of the lecture and also the main theme and purpose of the conversation or lecture. Knowing only the organization of the lecture may not be enough to answer these questions correctly.

§  Connecting Content Questions

Connecting content questions ask you to present your understanding of the relationships among different ideas in a lecture or conversation. It may require you to fill in a chart or table or maybe to answer regular multiple-choice questions. Again, taking notes would help you to answer this question.

§  Inference Questions

You could say that inference questions are a sub-element of questions that are found in the function, attitude, connecting content and purpose questions.  An Inference question requires you to understand the indirect meaning of a sentence stated in a lecture. This type of question requires you to look further than the surface and literal meaning of the speech, ideas, or sentences to find the correct answer. The keyword for this question type will likely be either “imply” or “infer”. In both situations, the information you will be in need will not be directly stated, which makes this question a little harder to answer.

TOEFL Speaking Syllabus

If you want to score well in speaking you should try to fulfil all the requirements of the exam. One should try to avoid mistakes. The total no of questions will be 6 for speaking and the total duration will be 20 minutes. The division in speaking is as follows:-

• In the first section, there will be 2 independent tasks. The preparation time for this task will be 15 seconds and the time to respond will be 45 seconds.

The speaking section of the TOEFL is the 3rd section of the test. Although it is the shortest section which is of only 17 minutes, it tends to be the hardest section for a lot of TOEFL test takers. The speaking section contains four speaking tasks with one task being the independent task and the three tasks being the integrated task. Difference Between Integrated and Independent TOEFL Speaking Tasks

• According to the topics, Integrated TOEFL speaking topics deal with academic topics while independent speaking topics are all about your personal experiences, opinions, and ideas.

TOEFL Integrated Speaking Task 3

• In this task first, you will be given an academic article about a general concept to read.

• After reading the academic article, you will have to listen to a short lecture given by a professor.
• Make sure to write down important points during reading and listening.
• For preparing an answer, you will be given 30 seconds and for speaking, you will be given 60 seconds which means 1 minute.

TOEFL Integrated Speaking Task 4

In  TOEFL Integrated Speaking Task 4 you will have to listen to a professor lecturing a class. After the lecture, you will be asked a question related to the lecture you have just listened to. Ensure to take notes while you listen to the lecture which will help you answer later. 20 seconds will be given to think and 60 seconds to speak the answer.

Task 1 -Integrated Writing Task

The Integrated Writing task demands you to use your English reading, listening, and writing skills. After this, comes the real task for the test-taker, wherein he/she has to write an essay that references both of these sources in order to answer the question. However, you are allowed to take notes during your listening part.

Task 2- Independent Writing Task

The  Independent Writing section demands that the candidate writes on a specific issue based on their knowledge. For the Independent Writing task, you will be asked a question on a specific topic or issue. You will need to write a response to that topic that explains your opinion, and you will also need to give reasons and examples that support your opinion.

The following are the basis on which it will be assessed: development, structure, and correct usage of vocabulary as well as grammar. The examiners do not judge you on the basis of whether you agree or disagree with a particular topic, they are prepared to accept different types of opinions.

Before you book an Exam, you need to create an account. Here, you have to create an ETS account to register for TOEFL.

Booking For TOEFL Exam:

Now that you have created an account, the next step is to book the TOEFL on a Test Date at a test center near you. For that, first, you will have to sign in with the username and password you have just created. The Login button can be found on the last step of creating your account, or you can go to https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/register/how-to-register.html to sign in. Here is a step-by-step process for TOEFL Registration.

1. Sign In to your Account with your Username and Password.
2. The image below shows what your TOEFL home will look like. Click on the Register / Find Test Centers and Dates to select your location and Dates.
3. In the next step, as you can see, you need to enter the closest location you want to appear for the exam and a 2-month period from which you want to choose the dates. (The time period of two months can be changed after this step, too).
4. Once you select from available Dates, you will be shown the list of centers available and distance in the form of a list as seen below. With every test center, you can see the link to show available exam times in the bottom right corner of the box. When you click that, you will be shown the timings available for that center on that date. If that’s convenient for you, you need to click on the “register” button which will be there with the timings.
5. You will be asked to provide Identification proof and a number. Apart from the Passport or Driving License, there are a number of proofs one can provide. However, there are some guidelines one needs to follow for ID Proofs. The Identity proof requirements depend on the country you are applying to. The ID Proof should be original, not expired, it should show your full name and a photograph that is clearly visible. A signature is also a must-needed requirement for ID.
6. Next, in one of the most important steps, candidates are allowed to choose the universities they want to send their TOEFL Scores. Students can choose up to 4 institutions to send their scores to, as soon as they are available.
7. The last step before payment is to review your Registration. You can change the Center, date, time, ID, and recipient details before confirming the TOEFL Registration.
8. Once you are done reviewing your application, you can add TOEFL Preparation materials if you want to.
9. Proceed to check out. The page will show your TOEFL Exam Details and other material packages if you have included them. You can see your subtotal to be paid in the bottom right.
